Myth - I feel cold, so my horse must be cold too.

Every animal has, what we call, a thermal comfort zone. This zone is the temperature where your body doesn’t have to use any energy to cool down or to stay warm. Now obviously this range can be impacted by factors such as humidity, wind, clothing, exercise and personal preference.

For humans this this thermal comfort zone is generally between 22 and 24 degrees Celsius. This means that when it’s below 22 degrees you might already start to feel a little bit cold and when it gets warmer then 24 degrees you might start to feel too warm.

Now here is the shocking news, for horses this thermal comfort zone is generally between 5 and 25 degrees Celsius!!!

Compare that, humans have a 2 degree variable, horses have a 20!!! degree variable where they do not have to expend energy to cool down or to stay warm! 20!!

Your horse is actually 10 times better at regulating it’s temperature then you are.

So next time you are cold and think your horse needs a rug, think again ;)
